Raptiva

Raptiva (Efalizumab) is an antibody used to treat psoriasis. Because Raptiva can suppress the immune system, serious infections and malignancies have been reported in patients taking Rapitva. Patients have also experienced malignant melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, non-cutaneous solid tumors, and lymphomas.

Following four cases of anemia, on July 20, 2005, the FDA announced a new warning on the Genentech drug. The package insert for Raptiva was modified to include a warning to stop use of the drug should hemolytic anemia occur. In addition, the information sheet has been updated to include news of post marketing reports of necrotizing fasciitis, tuberculous pneumonia, bacterial sepsis with seeding of distant sites, severe pneumonia with neutropenia, and worsening of infections such as pneumonia despite antimicrobial therapy.

Finally, in April of 2009, Raptiva's manufacturer, Genentech, announced a recall of Raptiva due to its connection to a potentially fatal brain infection: progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Ultimately linked to long-term Raptiva users, PML is a permanent, incurable infection that attacks the nervous system and often claims the patient's life.
