Accutane
Accutane is a medication used to treat acne but is causing severe bowel disease and birth defects.
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Accutane in May 1982. It has been associated with the onset of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in patients without a prior history of intestinal disorders. In some instances, symptoms have been reported to persist even after Accutane treatment has been stopped. In 2006, a report published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology revealed the link between IBD and Accutane and indicated that this connection should be taken into consideration before Accutane is prescribed for people who have a strong family history of IBD or people who already have symptoms of IBD.
IBD is now listed as a side effect on Accutane's product information label, noting that symptoms have been reported to persist after use of Accutane has ceased. The warning also states that Accutane users who experience abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or severe diarrhea should stop using Accutane immediately.
Perhaps even more dangerous, if Accutane is taken during pregnancy or within a month of becoming pregnant, it is known to cause severe birth defects (including brain and heart defects and mental retardation). The iPledge program began in early 2006 which requires women of childbearing age to have two tests to ensure that they're not pregnant before the initial prescription, and monthly pregnancy testing before each refill. Unfortunately, The program cannot help the hundreds of children born with birth defects caused by Accutane usage.
